Black Cabs to Return to Bank Junction in 18-Month Trial
Starting 28 July, black cabs will once again be allowed to drive through Bank junction in the City of London, as part of an 18-month trial.
Since 2017, only buses and cyclists could use the junction during peak weekday hours (7am–7pm) due to safety concerns after a tragic cyclist death and over 100 injuries.
But now, black cabs will be able to:
Travel west to east during construction on Leadenhall Street
And from October, also go east to west
🚫 Other vehicles, including private hire cars, will still be banned.
The City of London Corporation says this move could improve access for people less able to walk, cycle, or use public transport, and points to black cabs’ strong safety record and low-emission upgrades.
Critics, including cycling campaigners, worry it may undo years of progress in making the junction a safer, calmer space.
The final decision on whether to make the changes permanent will be made after the trial ends.
