Hammersmith Bridge reopens to cyclists after £2.9m refurb

Hammersmith Bridge is now open to cyclists following a major refurbishment that introduced new decking and designated lanes for north- and southbound riders, as well as a widened pedestrian path. Closed to vehicles since 2019 due to structural cracks, the Grade II*-listed bridge now features three carriageway lanes (two for cycling, one for walking) and remains shut to cars, with no decision yet on full reopening. E-cargo bike trials are underway to support accessibility, and the council is exploring long-term options like tolls or keeping the bridge car-free. The total repair cost is expected to reach £250m.
