So, what happened to the King's Cross countdown?
For years, 1 September has meant one thing for Harry Potter fans in London:
King's Cross.
The books established 1 September as the day Hogwarts students return to school, with the Hogwarts Express leaving Platform 9¾ at 11am.
That fictional moment eventually became a real-world fan tradition, with people gathering at King's Cross to recreate the countdown.
But 2026 is different.
The official Harry Potter website has explicitly confirmed that there will be no official event, countdown or announcement at King's Cross Station on 1 September and is advising fans not to travel there expecting the usual celebration.
King's Cross itself will still have its famous Platform 9¾ luggage trolley and Harry Potter shop, so you can certainly visit another time.
Just don't go there expecting the official Back to Hogwarts countdown.
This year's celebration is at Old Billingsgate
Instead of gathering around a railway station, Harry Potter fans are being given a dedicated event space.
Old Billingsgate, beside the Thames near Tower Bridge, will host the official London Back to Hogwarts celebration on 1 September.
The event is designed around the new HBO series and will include interactive fan moments, exclusive giveaways and a glimpse at the new adaptation.
So rather than simply standing around waiting for a clock to hit 11am, you'll actually have an event to explore.
And yes, you'll get a glimpse of the new HBO Harry Potter series
This is arguably the biggest reason this year's event is different.
The upcoming HBO Original Harry Potter series is set to debut this Christmas, and the Old Billingsgate event will give fans a glimpse into the new adaptation ahead of its release.
The important word here is “glimpse.”
The official announcement doesn't promise a full episode, a cast appearance or a specific trailer screening at the event.
So don't go expecting something that hasn't been announced.
But after years of waiting to see how the new television adaptation will look, getting an official preview is still a pretty big deal for Harry Potter fans.
The event is completely free but you need a ticket
This is probably the most important thing to know if you're planning to go.
Entry to the Old Billingsgate experience is free.
But it is not a walk-in event.
You need a ticket.
The official Harry Potter website says tickets are being released in limited daily batches at 11am BST from 24–28 August.
So if you're trying to get one during the final release:
Set an alarm for 11am.
And don't assume you can simply turn up at Old Billingsgate on 1 September and get inside.
What can you expect inside?
The organisers describe the event as a fan experience inspired by the new series, rather than simply a countdown.
The confirmed programme includes:
Interactive fan moments
Exclusive giveaways
A glimpse into the new HBO adaptation
Harry Potter-themed activities and experiences connected with the wider Wizarding World.
The official event information is deliberately teasing some elements rather than revealing every detail in advance.
And honestly, that makes sense.
There is clearly meant to be an element of surprise for people attending.
There's another official London Back to Hogwarts option
And this is something I would definitely recommend knowing about.
If you don't get an Old Billingsgate ticket or simply want even more Harry Potter on 1 September Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter is also holding its own Back to Hogwarts celebration.
The Studio Tour will have a special 11am announcement broadcast throughout the attraction.
After the opening announcement, additional broadcasts will take place every 30 minutes at Platform 9¾ throughout the day.
So the traditional 11am moment hasn't completely disappeared.
It's just happening in a different place.
The Studio Tour is already celebrating 25 years of the first film
There is another reason 1 September 2026 is particularly interesting for Harry Potter fans.
This year marks 25 years since Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone first reached cinemas.
Warner Bros. Studio Tour London is celebrating with its First Year at Hogwarts summer feature, running from 7 May to 7 September 2026.
The feature revisits moments from the first film, with sets, props and behind-the-scenes material designed around Harry's first year at Hogwarts.
So if you're visiting the Studio Tour around 1 September, you're getting the Back to Hogwarts celebration alongside a special anniversary feature.
What happens at the Studio Tour on 1 September?
The Studio Tour's Back to Hogwarts celebration includes:
An 11am announcement
followed by
additional broadcasts every 30 minutes at Platform 9¾.
Visitors can also enjoy Hagrid animatronic demonstrations, exclusive photo opportunities and themed food and drink.
There is also a complimentary Hogwarts Train Ticket included in the Studio Tour's Summer Feature Activity Passport.
Of course, the Studio Tour is a separate attraction and requires its own admission ticket.
So don't confuse this with the free Old Billingsgate event.
You can also celebrate Harry Potter's 25th anniversary at the cinema
If you can't get enough of Harry Potter, there's another option around Back to Hogwarts.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is returning to cinemas around the world as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations.
And there is an extra reason to see it this time.
The screenings include 10 minutes of previously unseen behind-the-scenes content.
The official Harry Potter information says the film will screen across North America, EMEA, LATAM and APAC between 27 August and 3 September, although exact dates and times vary by location.
So check your local cinema listings if you want to make this part of your Back to Hogwarts plans.
You can even have a Harry Potter movie marathon
If one film isn't enough, several UK cinema chains are joining the Back to Hogwarts celebrations.
The official Harry Potter site currently lists:
Everyman - all eight films at Everyman King’s Cross, with selected films at cinemas nationwide.
ODEON - Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets across its cinemas.
Vue - the first two films across participating cinemas.
Cineworld - the first two films across participating cinemas.
So there are plenty of ways to turn 1 September into a full Harry Potter day.
And there's an official Back to Hogwarts Showcase
The celebrations aren't limited to London.
The annual Back to Hogwarts Showcase will take place on 1 September, with special announcements and surprises from across the Harry Potter universe.
It will be available through the official Harry Potter YouTube and TikTok channels.
So even if you don't manage to get a ticket to Old Billingsgate, you can still take part in the wider Back to Hogwarts celebration.
Where exactly is Old Billingsgate?
The official event is taking place at:

1 Old Billingsgate Walk
16 Lower Thames Street
London EC3R 6DX
The venue is beside the Thames, close to Tower Bridge and the Tower of London.
That makes it quite easy to turn the event into a bigger day out.
You could:
Back to Hogwarts → Tower Bridge → riverside walk → lunch → Borough Market
or head towards the City and explore the area around St Katharine Docks afterwards.
Just make sure you work the rest of your day around your Back to Hogwarts ticket time.
How to get to Old Billingsgate
The easiest Underground stations are:
Tower Hill
and
Monument
Both put you within walking distance of the venue.
You can also reach the area from London Bridge and Fenchurch Street, making the event relatively straightforward to reach from different parts of London.
And unlike the old King's Cross celebration, you aren't going to have to deal with the crowds around one railway station just to experience the official event.
What if you don't get a ticket?
Don't panic.
You have several other Harry Potter options around the same time.
Option 1: Warner Bros. Studio Tour London
Go to the Studio Tour for its 11am Back to Hogwarts announcement and the additional Platform 9¾ broadcasts.
Option 2: Go to the cinema
Catch Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone with the new behind-the-scenes material.
Option 3: Have a Harry Potter movie marathon
Check Everyman, ODEON, Vue or Cineworld for the Back to Hogwarts screenings.
Option 4: Watch the Showcase
Follow the official Harry Potter channels for the Back to Hogwarts Showcase on 1 September.
So missing the Old Billingsgate ticket doesn't mean missing Back to Hogwarts entirely.
Should you still visit King's Cross?
Absolutely just don't go expecting the official celebration.
King's Cross is still an important Harry Potter location because of the connection with Platform 9¾.
The station still has the famous luggage trolley photo opportunity and the Platform 9¾ shop.
It's just that the official 1 September countdown is not happening there in 2026.
If you want the traditional photo, you can still visit King's Cross on another day.
If you want the official 2026 celebration, go to Old Billingsgate.
So, what should a Harry Potter fan actually do on 1 September?
If you manage to get one of the free Old Billingsgate tickets, that's the obvious choice.
Go there for the official 2026 celebration, see what HBO has prepared for the new series and enjoy the fan experience.
If you don't get a ticket, don't waste your day heading to King's Cross expecting the old countdown.
Instead, you could make it a proper Harry Potter day in London.
Start with the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London if you have a ticket, or catch one of the anniversary cinema screenings.
Then head into central London, visit King's Cross for the famous Platform 9¾ photo, grab some food and finish the day watching the official Back to Hogwarts Showcase online.
Because this year's celebration is actually bigger than just one countdown.
It marks 25 years of the first Harry Potter film, the return of Philosopher's Stone to cinemas, the launch of a new HBO adaptation and another year of the worldwide Back to Hogwarts tradition.
And that's what makes 1 September 2026 a particularly interesting day for Harry Potter fans.
Just remember:
Don't go to King's Cross expecting the official countdown.
This year, Hogwarts is sending you somewhere else.
