Exploring New Mexico: A Route 66 Adventure You Can’t Miss

There’s something undeniably magical about New Mexico. From its breathtaking landscapes and ancient archaeological sites to the unique blend of cultures that make it truly one of a kind, this state offers a taste of the American Southwest like nowhere else.

And if you’re a road tripper at heart, New Mexico’s stretch of the historic Route 66 is an absolute must. Spanning over 350 miles, it’s a journey filled with charming small towns, quirky roadside attractions, and experiences that will stay with you long after the trip is over.

Having recently traveled through New Mexico, I wanted to share my Top 5 favorite places to visit along Route 66 and why each one is worth a stop. So buckle up—this ride through the Land of Enchantment is going to be unforgettable!

1. Gallup

Gallup, often called the “Gateway to Native America,” is brimming with history and culture. The town is surrounded by stunning red rock formations and is known for its ties to Native American art and jewelry. If you’re lucky, you might catch one of the traditional dances or cultural festivals that take place here.

Gallup also has an undeniable Route 66 vibe, with its vintage signs, retro motels, and the iconic El Rancho Hotel, where Hollywood stars once stayed. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to wander, shop, and soak up the stories of the people who call it home.

2. Acoma Pueblo

Known as the “Sky City,” Acoma Pueblo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America, perched atop a 367-foot sandstone mesa.

The views from the mesa are incredible, and the Acoma people’s hospitality is second to none. Be sure to visit the Haak’u Museum to learn more about their history and culture. Trust me, this stop is as enriching as it is breathtaking.

3. Albuquerque

Oh, Albuquerque. This city is the beating heart of New Mexico’s Route 66 stretch, blending old-school charm with modern energy. Take a stroll down Central Avenue (Route 66’s original path) to see neon signs, vintage diners, and quirky shops that make you feel like you’re in a different era.

For a bird’s-eye view of the city, hop on the Sandia Peak Tramway—the views of the surrounding desert and mountains are out of this world. And if you’re visiting in October, don’t miss the International Balloon Fiesta, where the sky fills with hundreds of colorful hot air balloons.

4. Blue Hole, Santa Rosa

If you’re craving a little adventure, make your way to the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa. This natural, crystal-clear swimming hole is a popular spot for diving, swimming, and cooling off after a long day on the road.

The water is unbelievably blue and refreshing—trust me, you won’t believe your eyes until you see it for yourself. It’s also a great place to stretch your legs, snap some Instagram-worthy photos, and feel like a kid again.

5. Tucumcari

Tucumcari is the kind of small town that makes you fall in love with Route 66 all over again. With its neon-lit motels, vintage cars, and rich history, it’s the perfect spot to relive the golden age of road trips.

While you’re here, stay at the Roadrunner Lodge (@roadrunnerlodge) for a dose of retro charm. And don’t forget to snap a photo with the famous Tucumcari murals—they’re scattered all over town and tell the story of this iconic Route 66 stop.
