Extra Tips

  • Get an Oyster Card or contactless bank card for transport (bus/tube).

  • Many museums are free great for breaks between outdoor walks.

  • February is chilly dress in layers & bring gloves.

  • Book shows, Kew Gardens, or Afternoon Tea in advance.

What you can use

  • You can use an Oyster card with pay-as-you-go credit for Tube, bus, DLR and many rail services in London.

  • You can also simply tap in/out with a contactless card (e.g., your bank debit/credit card) or a mobile wallet (Apple Pay / Google Pay) and travel as you would.

  • Daily caps apply so you don’t pay more than a set amount in one day if you use pay-as-you-go.

⚠️ Things to check / best practice

  • Make sure you touch in at the start of a journey and touch out at the end (for Tube/Overground) when using Oyster or contactless. Otherwise you may be over-charged.

  • If you tap in with one card (or device) and tap out with another, the system may treat it as two journeys or not apply the cap correctly. So stick to the same card/device for one full direction.

Just don’t switch cards during a journey. You must always touch out with the same card as you used to touch in.

  • If you’re visiting and the subscription/discounts aren’t relevant, a contactless card or mobile wallet is often the simplest. Many visitors skip buying a tourist Oyster because contactless works seamlessly.

  • If you buy an Oyster, check your balance and top it up in advance or at machines; the machines still work and you can load money online or at stations.

My recommendation for you

Since you’re visiting for about a week and staying in London Feb 6–12, here’s what I would suggest:

  • Use your contactless bank card or use Apple Pay/Google Pay. It’s very convenient and eliminates the need to buy and top up an Oyster.

  • If you prefer to keep things separate (for budgeting) you could buy an Oyster card for you and top it up either works.

  • Make sure you have valid cards/devices ready before your first journey, so you don’t find yourself stuck at barriers.

  • In colder February weather, shorter journeys and walking may be common and this ease of tap-and-go is quite nice.

  • Check if any of the rail journeys outside London (if you’re doing the day trip) require paper tickets or special rail card discounts contactless works for most London Tube/Overground journeys but outside zones you should check the train operator’s rules.
