The Best Parks and Picnic Spots in London for Families
One of the things I love most about London is that no matter how busy the city feels, you're never too far from a patch of green.
And when the sun finally decides to show up, Londoners do what Londoners do best.
They head to the park.
Blankets come out.
Picnics appear.
Kids run around with ice creams.
Dogs chase tennis balls.
And suddenly, the city slows down for a while.
The best part?
You don't have to leave London to enjoy a proper family day out.
Whether you're looking for playgrounds, lakes, deer, flowers or simply enough space for the kids to burn off some energy, these are some of the best parks and picnic spots in London for families.
1. Hyde Park
If you're visiting London with children, Hyde Park is difficult to beat.
It's enormous, meaning you'll never struggle to find somewhere for a picnic. Families can hire pedal boats on the Serpentine, visit the Diana Memorial Playground nearby in Kensington Gardens or simply enjoy an afternoon feeding ducks and watching swans glide across the lake.
Bring a football, pack some sandwiches and don't overplan.
Hyde Park is one of those places where doing very little somehow turns into a perfect day.
2. Regent's Park
Regent's Park feels like it was designed for family days out.
Beautiful gardens, wide paths and plenty of open spaces make it ideal for children.
But what really makes it special is the combination of activities nearby.
London Zoo sits on one side, the boating lake is close by and the famous rose gardens are lovely in spring and summer.
It's easy to spend half a day here without ever hearing anyone say they're bored.
3. Greenwich Park
Few parks combine history and views quite like Greenwich Park.
Children can run around the wide grassy spaces while adults enjoy one of the finest panoramas in London.
After your picnic, walk towards the Royal Observatory, explore Greenwich Market or visit the National Maritime Museum, which is brilliantly family-friendly.
And if you arrive by Uber Boat, the journey becomes part of the adventure.
4. Richmond Park
Seeing deer roaming freely is something many visitors don't expect to experience in London.
But that's exactly what makes Richmond Park so special.
As London's largest Royal Park, it feels more like the countryside than a capital city.
Families can enjoy cycling, walking and plenty of picnic spots surrounded by nature.
Just remember to admire the deer from a respectful distance and never feed them.
Sometimes it's hard to believe central London is only an hour away.
5. St James's Park
With Buckingham Palace on one side and Horse Guards Parade on the other, St James's Park might be London's most elegant park.
Children love watching the ducks, geese and pelicans that live on the lake, while parents can enjoy postcard-worthy views towards Buckingham Palace.
It isn't the biggest park, but its location makes it perfect if you're exploring Westminster and need somewhere peaceful to sit down for lunch.
6. Victoria Park
East London's favourite park has been welcoming families for generations.
There's a brilliant playground, plenty of cafés nearby and enough space for children to run around freely.
The boating lake and the beautiful Chinese Pagoda add a little extra charm, while summer weekends often bring a lively atmosphere without feeling overcrowded.
It's one of those parks that locals return to again and again.
7. Holland Park
Holland Park feels like one of London's hidden treasures.
The peaceful Kyoto Garden is a favourite with families, and the peacocks wandering through the park never fail to delight children.
It isn't as large as Hyde Park or Richmond Park, but that's part of its appeal.
Bring a picnic blanket, find a quiet corner and enjoy one of West London's loveliest green spaces.
8. Battersea Park
Families often overlook Battersea Park, which is a shame because it has so much to offer.
There's a fantastic children's playground, a small zoo, boating lake and beautiful riverside walks.
In spring, the cherry blossoms make the park particularly lovely.
And because it's slightly away from the busiest tourist areas, it often feels calmer than some of London's more famous parks.
9. Hampstead Heath
If your idea of a perfect family picnic involves rolling hills and incredible views, Hampstead Heath is hard to beat.
Parliament Hill offers one of London's most famous panoramas, while the ponds and woodlands make the whole area feel wonderfully wild.
Children love exploring here because it doesn't feel manicured.
It feels adventurous.
And that's exactly what makes it so memorable.
10. Kew Gardens
Technically a botanical garden rather than a park, Kew Gardens deserves a place on this list.
Families can spend hours exploring the glasshouses, treetop walkway and vast open spaces.
The Children's Garden is particularly popular, giving younger visitors plenty of opportunities to climb, splash and discover.
It's educational without feeling educational.
And somehow, everyone leaves happy.
Sometimes the Best Family Days Are the Simplest
London offers countless attractions, museums and experiences.
But some of the happiest memories come from the simplest days.
Sharing sandwiches on a blanket.
Watching children chase pigeons.
Eating ice cream by a lake.
Or spending an afternoon doing absolutely nothing in particular.
Because family days don't always need tickets, queues or detailed itineraries.
Sometimes all you need is a bit of sunshine, some snacks and a good patch of grass.
And thankfully, London has plenty of those.
